In response to the growing needs of people in the Watertown area struggling to find affordable housing, a group of concerned citizens got together and determined there was a vital need for emergency housing in Watertown.
Thanks to a grant from the South Dakota Housing Development Authority, as well as financial support from the City of Watertown, Prairie Lakes Healthcare System, Codington County, and the Watertown Area Community Foundation, Watertown Cares was founded January 2023 with the goal of providing a safe and welcoming space for homeless individuals and families in our community. In May 2023, we were able to buy a property for our emergency homeless shelter, which opened August 28, 2023.
We offer eight rooms for homeless individuals and families, including one Americans with Disabilities room. Since opening, we have been filled to capacity every day. When someone moves out, someone moves in within 24 hours. Our shelter is more than just a place to stay – we offer case management designed to help our clients get back on their feet and rebuild their lives.
Additionally, we offer case management to people who are not residents in our shelter, but need some guidance in finding housing, or need help in remaining in their homes. We are here to help in any way we can.
